關乎書寫私我，總是有許多難以啟齒的大事、小事，乃至於在行文中連自己也騙得下手。張愛玲也書寫私我，可是她從不說謊，不矯飾，不拐彎作態，只細密編織筆下人的命運，偶爾犀利，偶爾尖聳，偶爾撇筆留一抹說不盡的蒼涼，那是筆下人的世界，但我們斟酌細看，指不定會發現這些也是她生命的底色。

Writing about the private self is fraught with unspoken matters—large and small—and even self-deception. Eileen Chang also wrote of the private self, yet she neither lied nor embellished nor postured. She wove her characters’ fates with quiet precision—at times sharp, at times piercing, at times leaving a trace of inexpressible desolation. Though it is their world, a closer look suggests these tones may also be the ground color of her own life.
